ABOUT THE PROJECT
One Earth is partnering with the District of Saanich and Bioregional the global ‘One Planet Cities’ project, funded by the KR Foundation, focused on four cities - Saanich (Canada), Elsinore (Denmark), Oxfordshire (UK), and Durban (South Africa).
Saanich resident Cora Hallsworth, Senior Associate at One Earth and Principal of Cora Hallsworth Consulting, is the local lead on the project.
One Planet Saanich is co-sponsored locally by Vancity Credit Union. As a values-based financial co-operative, Vancity is committed to transforming how banking is done so we can help our members and their local communities thrive financially, socially and environmentally. The local branch is the Mount Tolmie Community Branch.

Bioregional’s One Planet Living framework is being used to structure the project. The ten simple principles – from health and happiness and sustainable food to zero carbon energy – provide a common language to talk about sustainability and to drive change. Action plans will be assessed against Bioregional’s One Planet Goals and Guidance for Cities and Regions, as well as carbon and ecological footprints, to show cities and stakeholders how well they respond to the challenge of One Planet Living, and how they could collaborate to achieve more. This project will also help inform the development of Saanich's updated Climate Plan: 100% Renewable and Resilient Saanich and deliver a One Planet Sustainability Scan for Saanich.
In February, 2020, One Planet Saanich hosted an orientation for hte region as well as a One Planet Saanich stakeholder action planning workshop. On June 6th 2019, participants of One Planet Saanich shared highlights of the first year at the beautiful gardens at the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific. Twelve Saanich-based organizations have now created their One Planet Action Plans or One Planet ‘Scans.'
